Health and Survival Tip #1- Check your cholesterol

Most people know that having your cholesterol checked is a good idea. The question is why?Â Studies have shown that elevated cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease (like a heart attack) and strokes.Â

However, it is important to realize that high cholesterol does NOT cause heart attacks. As a matter of fact, half of all people who have heart attacks and strokes Â have normal cholesterol.Â Â Therefore, if you are being treated for high cholesterol, don’t assume that you don’t need to improve your diet or increase yor exericise.

When you check your cholesterol, your doctor may reportÂ 4 values:

1. Total Cholesterol- This level preferably should be below 200.Â Â Usually, levels above 240 will be treated with medications.Â Levels between 200-240 may improve withÂ diet changes but a person needs to be dedicated and consistent.

2. LDL- This is known as BAD CHOLESTEROL.Â Basically, this is the molecule that is delivered to your heart and arteries, increasing risk of a heart attack or stroke.Â More concerning is when this LDL molecule is oxidized. However, we don’t measure oxidized LDL so usually just try to lower the level to less than 120 or less than 100 if the person has diabetes or a history of heart disease.

3. HDL- This is know as GOOD CHOLESTEROL and its job is to remove the BAD cholesterol from the arteries and take it back to the liver where it is destroyed.Â Ideally, levels should be above 40. When above 60 there is a reduction of heart attack risks.

4. Triglycerides- These are basically free fats floating around in your blood. Levels should be below 150 mg/dl. If your levels are above this, talk with your doctor how you can improve it. Usually, weight loss, fish oils and improved diet can help.Â Sometimes, medications are needed.

All people should have any idea what their cholesterol is. Ifyou don’t know, ask your doctor to check. If your levels are healthy, then you may be able re check your levels in 5- 7 years.

Potential Role Of Fish-based Fatty Acids In Resolving, Preventing Asthma

In an ongoing effort to determine the anti-inflammatory value of diets rich in some types of fish, scientists studying asthma and allergic reactions have found that a molecule produced by the body from omega-3 fatty acids helps resolve and prevent respiratory distress in laboratory mice.

The research, supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, was led by a research team at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School.

Resolvin E1 (RvE1) is a metabolic product of an omega-3 fatty acid found in cold-water fish such as salmon, mackerel and anchovies. It is made by the body in response to the onset of inflammation.

This study identified RvE1 as having a key role in both dampening the development of airway inflammation and promoting its resolution in mice, in part by dampening innate immune signals that trigger inflammation. Other studies have indicated that increased levels of omega-3 fatty acids are associated with lower asthma prevalence in people, but the mechanisms to support that observation are poorly understood.

The new study provides scientists an opportunity to focus on the role of RvE1 as a potential therapeutic candidate.

India’s patent office rejects Boehringer’s application for pediatric antiretroviral

India’s Patent Office in New Delhi earlier this month rejected German drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim’s application for a pediatric version of the antiretroviral drug nevirapine, consequently allowing local generic pharmaceutical companies such as Aurobindo and Cipla to continue marketing low-cost versions of the medicine in the domestic market, the Business Standard reports.(original article)
